My Slightly Uninteresting Thanksgiving Holiday

Goals and Tips... Again

Reflection:
  • I am now slightly better at speaking in a faster pace and mimicking the pitch pattern of long words (and not confusing it with stress)
  • I have also improved the skills to nasalize my speech in order to sound a bit more natural.
  • I have been attending the Japanese table and plan to continue to do so
  • Anime shadowing on my own once every week was a bit too whimsical, as I could manage it only once every two weeks
Goals/Activities (I guess my goals have become more ambitious now):
  • I want to eventually reach a stage in which I can understand 80% of an anime without subtitles
  • And... engage in simple conversations about which character is better: Naruto or Sasuke
  • Also, I want to be able to read manga in Japanese, it shouldn't be that hard, right?
  • In order to do that, at least once a week I will read aloud my textbook and listen to all of the audios, trying to match the intonation 100%
  • A super cool thing that I discovered last week is talking to myself: So, I just come up with a Japanese question that has something to do with the chapter and I ask Bo and then Bo responds and asks me a question.  すごいですね!

Noooooooooo, Naruto is ending... But it's so cool, but it's ending, but it's so cool, yet it's ending. Two chapters left...

Goals and Tips

Goals:
  • To produce the pitch pattern of longer words (three moras or more) correctly and be able to recognize it.
  • To learn how to follow the pitch pattern of longer sentences.
  • To mimic the rhythm of words containing nasals as moras better
  • To sound more natural when producing individual sounds.
Activities:
  • Do anime shadowing of short phrases when watching the new episodes of Sword Art Online and Hunter x Hunter.
  • Go to Japanese language tables every week (unless there is an emergency)
  • Engage in conversations with some of the sensee
  • Try to memorize pitch patterns of words
And because this post would be too blunt without some music:

How do I say "I like anime"

So let's imagine for a second that I am a super self-centered and loquacious person, or let's use the Romance language noun "parlanchina" for lack of a better term in English. So now put that new "me" in a situation where I have to introduce myself to someone and be rather thorough in doing so. Here's what I would say:

はじめまして。ハジースカです。どうぞよろしく。
わたしはブルガリアのソフィアからきました。プリンストンだいがくのにねんせいです。せんこうはぶつりがくです。
はがねのれんきんじゅつしとコードギアスとハンターハンターとソードアート・オンラインがすきです。

Now let's hope that I will be able to reproduce that ^^ on the recording.

Next destination: Japan

The rest of this blog entry is going to be in English since I do not particularly trust the translating skills of Google Translate yet and want to have at least one portion of this text that is relatively coherent and sensible.

Contemplating on my first formal encounters with the Japanese language in the past three days, I could come up with 5 things that made my heart flutter with excitement: 1) having to memorize the Hiragana syllabaries in a short time; 2) listening to pure Japanese speech by Sato~sensee for a pretty long time and actually recognizing certain phrases from anime; 3) being able to talk about things I love because now I have an "academic" reason to do so; 4) studying a non-Indo-European language with the hope that it might satiate my immense linguistics hunger; 5) hopefully meeting other people with similar interests to finally make some friends at Princeton.

To be frank, the best thing about the course so far is repeating after Sato~sensee phrases that I have heard millions of times in Japanese TV shows but have never been able to reproduce correctly myself. I am very hopeful about this course, and I believe that if it continues to flow so well as it did those first three days, my dream of journeying to Japan this summer to brush up on the language and absorb some of the かわいい culture and mentality of the people might come true.

And since this blog entry seems a bit dull to me and slightly obnoxious with this assemblage of three sharply differing writing systems, and if that is the case for you too, I would like to try to change your first impression of me by attaching this beautiful piece of music that I discovered can help me a lot with stress before exams:

Jaane! Until next time.
